I am so excited!! Georg James has designed a canvas of my FAVORITE flower — the bird of paradise.  They even named it after me — Gussie’s Birds.  The flowers are so graceful and gorgeous.  They were kind enough to paint one on 18 mesh for me and the stitch guide is almost done.  This one makes four very beautiful canvases for a spectacular wall grouping.

Retreat is over but all our heads are spinning with new stitches, new thoughts about stitching, and just feeling so blessed that we had Julia this year.  She is a calm, patient person who handles everyone with grace.  Just like so many teachers that I have had, Julia is very willing to make your canvas your very OWN.

Store is back together the way it should be, so now will start on the things that were sort of laid aside while we were having a ton of fun.  No pictures today but will be sorting and opening boxes to see what has arrived.

Georg’s new Orchid will be in the new Needlepoint Now and the Needlepointers.  I will share the picture this week.  I’ve been running an ad in the daily newspaper.  I have met some new people — some looking for things that I don’t carry but have still come into the store to check me out.   They have discovered that they are able to use some things that I carry.  It has been a treat to meet this new people.

Today is Julia’s last day, so will take her to Washington Place.  It is now part of the governor’s mansion complex but at one point in time it belonged to my family.  It was built by Captain John Dominis (Mom’s family) in the 1840’s.  His son John Owen married Queen Lili’uokalani.  John had a son who was a hanai (Hawaiian adoption) of the Queen.  My mother was born at Washington Place in 1916.  It is a wonderful feeling (sometimes overwhelming) to have a family that was part of Hawaii’s history.

FIRST DAY OF RETREAT!!  Sitting here with everything set up waiting for everyone to come.  The canvases are all different and I just know we will see some new ideas and talk waaay to much.  Julia arrived Wednesday (such a long trip) and I started showing off Oahu to her.  We have several more trips to do.  She is staying in the Kaimana Hotel with a partial ocean and partial Diamond Head view.  So here’s the classroom (right in the middle of my store) and my 2 canvases — look closely at the kimono — I’ve started stiching.

Aren’t they fun?

A reminder that there is ONLY one — that’s one more –week for the store wide sale.  All things are on sale!  If you are looking for something, just email or call and I can let you know if it is in stock.   Been putting the canvases and threads together for my August retreat.  There is so much variety, we are going to have a ton of fun.

Georg and John are working on their Orchid canvas.  I will have the picture soon — it is GORGEOUS.  Also have in stock Peter Ashe’s I’olani Palace and King Kamehameha Statue.

Been working on Lani’s gold and red kimono — it is gorgeous.  When I finish some sections, I will take a picture and show off  the gorgeous stitch guide that Julia put together for me.

I’m getting the canvases ready for my retreat with Julia Snyder.  There are several perks that a store owner has — one of them is being able to start on her retreat canvas early. Never mind that I haven’t finished the others — they are in progress.  I am doing one of Lani’s kimonos — her beautiful gold and red kimono.  It is on the stretcher bars and most threads are pulled.  So tomorrow night — a birthday present to myself — I get to start.  My husband is out of town and I will be able to enjoy this canvas all by myself.

Isn’t she gorgeous — just perfect to work on.  don’t worry I am still working on the woody — getting the ocean and the palm trees done — want to finish them before I go on to another section.

Happy Fourth of July!!  I hope that you are all having a great weekend.  Honolulu will be having it’s first Fourth of July Parade through Waikiki.  Not only will we be celebrating the Fourth but also the 175th birthday of our Royal Hawaiian Band.  The band was started by King Kalakaua and we still have them playing today (well not the same people — but the band).  Hawaii has so many things that are very unique — just look at some of the canvases.  I know you have seem some of them, but take a look at one of my store panels.  Aren’t I lucky to live here!!!

That beautiful plumeria is distributed by Jelly Bean Stock.  They are a wonderful group of artists who produce beautiful designs of all types.  The plumeria is done by Mary Marlee.

Georg and John have produced another canvas.  It features a single blossom of the gorgeous Tropical Sunrise Hibiscus.  It is 13 x 13 and painted on 13 mesh.

Do you remember the Woody?  I really have been working on it (well off and on).  Take a look at the palm trees and the water.  Trunks are watercolours couched down and the leaves — the long and short of it all.  But I love them.  Water is perfect with splendor and accentuate in a darning pattern.

I really enjoy the tropical flowers that are around me.  Thank heaven that the garden I have survives inspite of me.  Another designer has caught my eye — this depiction of the yellow plumeria is so beautiful.  The yellow plumeria in my yard has an exquisite fragrance that always brings back memories of events that my family celebrated with these flowers made into lei.  Enjoy this beauty!!

Tuesday May 24

Georg and John have added to their collection — a beautiful Tropical Sunrise Hibiscus — corals, oranges, yellows, lavenders and so many more colors.  What are they thinking of doing next?

Watch for her in my coming ads in Needlepoint Now and Needlepointers.  When you are visiting, you have to see Georg and John’s work at the Trump Tower in Waikiki and the Disney Resort, Aulani, in Ko’olina.  Georg is the artist with John being the writer, but together they have created wonderful works of art and literature for Island families to enjoy — both in hotels and private residences.
